Martha, a woman in her early thirties, is on vacation with her father when he dies suddenly. She returns home to care for her demanding mother and declines a marriage proposal from her boss due to his criticism of her appearance. Feeling unappreciated, Martha accepts a proposal from Helmuth, an equally abusive man who dominates her life. On their honeymoon in Italy, Helmuth resigns Martha from her job, has her mother committed to a mental institution, and rapes her after she's sunburned. Back home, Martha believes Helmuth's behavior is normal until she befriends Herr Kaiser, who reveals that Helmuth is a sadist. As Martha begins to rebel against Helmuth's control, she becomes convinced he's intent on killing her.
'Martha' (1974) directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, is a psychological drama-thriller based on Cornell Woolrich's novel 'Waltz into Darkness'.
