Margit Carstensen (February 29, 1940 – June 1, 2023) was a German actress known internationally for her work with director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Born and raised in Kiel, she studied acting at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg and began her career on stage in various cities. In 1969, she gained national attention working under Fassbinder's direction in Bremen. She went on to star in several of his films, including 'The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant' (1972) and 'Martha' (1974). Carstensen held steady engagements with theater companies from 1973 onwards and also appeared in international film productions like 'Possession' (1981) and 'Angry Harvest' (1985). She received numerous awards, including the German Film Awards (Gold) in 1973.
