Albert Nobbs (Glenn Close) is a meticulous waiter at Morrison's Hotel in late 19th century Dublin, living as a man despite being biologically female. He saves money for his own business while remaining lonely and isolated from others, except for his colleagues. When painter Hubert Page (Janet McTeer) arrives and shares Albert's bed one night, Hubert discovers Albert's secret but keeps it, showing Albert a new path of life that includes marriage and emotional support from a wife. Inspired, Albert sets his sights on younger co-worker Helen Dawes (Mia Wasikowska), unaware that she is involved with brusque colleague Joe Mackins (Aaron Johnson). As Albert pursues Helen, he begins to realize the complexities of romantic pursuit.
Albert Nobbs is a drama film released in 2011, directed by Rodrigo García. The story, based on George Moore's short tale 'Celibate for a Lifetime,' explores themes of identity, gender norms, and loneliness through its protagonist, Albert Nobbs. Glenn Close delivers a powerful performance as the titular character, who was born a woman but lives and works as a man to secure employment and save money for his own business. The film navigates Albert's journey towards potential companionship and self-discovery amidst the societal expectations of late 19th century Dublin.
