He gained recognition for his role as Billy Kennedy on the Australian soap opera Neighbours (1994–2000), earning two Logie Award nominations. Spencer also portrayed Dr. Robert Chase in the American medical drama House (2004–2012) and Captain Matthew Casey in Chicago Fire (2012–2023).
