Essie Davis, born and raised in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, is an acclaimed Australian actress who emerged from the Old Nick Company at the University of Tasmania in the late 1980s. She graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney. Her career took off after her role in 'Dad and Dave: On Our Selection' (1995). She gained international recognition with roles in 'The Matrix Reloaded' and 'The Matrix Revolutions'. Davis won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in 'A Streetcar Named Desire' (2003) and received a Tony nomination for 'Jumpers' (2004). She has also appeared in notable productions like 'Girl with a Pearl Earring', 'Sweeney Todd', and 'Australia'. In 2008, she returned to Tasmania to launch the Tasmanian Theatre Company.
