Barbara (Monique Andrée Serf, 9 June 1930 – 24 November 1997) was a French singer who rose to fame as La Chanteuse de minuit ('the midnight singer') in Paris cabarets during the late 1950s. Born in Paris to a Jewish family, she faced challenges during World War II while hiding from German occupation. After the war, she pursued singing despite physical limitations preventing her from becoming a pianist. Barbara became known for melancholic songs like 'Mon Enfance' and achieved significant success with tracks such as 'Dis, quand reviendras-tu?' (1962), 'Ma plus belle histoire d'amour' (1966), and 'L'Aigle noir' (1970). She was deeply affected by her family's experiences during the war, including sexual abuse by her father at age 10. Despite these hardships, Barbara became a prominent figure in French music.
