In the late 1960s East Africa, Catherine and her husband Roberto live a life of luxury due to Roberto's safari business. When Roberto is severely injured by a leopard, pilot Gordon Coburn flies him to hospital. Catherine becomes smitten with Gordon, leading to an affair and eventual separation from Roberto. Catherine moves in with Gordon, but their happiness is short-lived when Gordon is involved in a plane crash that kills four children while flying to a Massai settlement at night. The accident causes Gordon's behavior to deteriorate; he starts drinking heavily, becomes violent, and abuses Catherine physically. When Catherine confronts him about the accident, his behavior improves temporarily but soon worsens again. One drunken night, Gordon attempts to rape Catherine before shooting himself with his gun. Catherine is arrested and charged with murder, but Roberto stands by her side. In court, Gordon's family accuses Catherine of killing their son, while Catherine insists on being defended by Jonathan Makuyo, a Massai lawyer she had met after the accident.
Kein Himmel über Afrika (English: 'No Heaven over Africa') is a 2005 German-French television film directed by Roland Suso Richter. Set in late 1960s East Africa, the movie explores themes of love, betrayal, guilt, and redemption against the backdrop of colonialism and its aftermath. The story revolves around Catherine, Roberto, and Gordon, whose lives become intertwined in a complex web of passion, tragedy, and deception. While the film is a compelling drama that delves into the psyche of its characters, it also serves as a commentary on the social and cultural dynamics of post-colonial Africa.
