Helena Bergström, born February 5, 1964, in Kortedala, Gothenburg, Sweden, is an acclaimed actress and director. Granddaughter of actor Olof Widgren, she is married to Colin Nutley and has starred in many of his films. Despite initially dreaming of working with animals, Bergström became fascinated with theatre during a year-long exchange student stay in Mississippi. She trained at the Swedish National Academy of Mime and Acting, graduating in 1988. Bergström won several awards for her performances, including Best Actress at the Swedish Film Awards and Montreal Film Festival for 'The Last Dance'. In 2007, she made her directorial debut with 'Mind the Gap'. She has two children with Nutley.

When war breaks out in 1939, Annika lives with her parents near the Norwegian border. Her cousin Harald, involved in black-market dealing, escapes to Norway after being pursued by police. Annika moves to Stockholm and finds work as a waitress. There, she meets the jovial Berit, with whom she enjoys a lively social life. She also encounters Bengt, who courts her and they marry quickly. However, it becomes apparent that Bengt is not the man he seemed during their courtship.
