ストーリー

Before the Rain (Pred dozhdot) unfolds in three interconnected stories that build towards a tragic climax. The first story introduces us to an orthodox Christian monk, Father Petre, who lives in a remote Macedonian monastery. Despite his peaceful existence, he becomes embroiled in the escalating ethnic and religious tensions when he decides to help a Muslim woman fleeing her abusive husband.

The second story follows Alex, a British photo agent visiting Macedonia with his fiancée, Madeleine. He encounters an old friend from his university days, Zoran, who is now a war photographer documenting the conflict in the region. Alex becomes drawn into Zoran's dangerous world as he begins to understand the realities of the situation.

The third story focuses on Zoran and his brother Kiril, who are part of the same ethnic group as Father Petre but have differing views on how to handle the tensions. As the conflict reaches a boiling point, Zoran tries to protect his family and friends while also attempting to capture the truth of what's happening around them.

The three storylines converge in a climactic event that highlights the futility and devastating consequences of war.

概要

Before the Rain is a powerful drama from Macedonian filmmaker Milcho Manchevski, released in 1994. The film presents a stark and unflinching portrait of the ethnic and religious hatred simmering in Macedonia during the early 1990s, as Yugoslavia began to fragment. It's structured as a triptych, with each section focusing on different characters: an orthodox Christian monk, Father Petre; a British photo agent, Alex; and a native Macedonian war photographer, Zoran.

Through these interconnected stories, Before the Rain explores themes of love, violence, innocence lost, and the senselessness of war. It's notable for its non-linear narrative structure and poetic cinematography, which help to convey the film's haunting atmosphere. Despite being set against a specific historical backdrop, the film offers a universal message about the destructive potential of hatred and intolerance.
