Set on Elba island in 1814, 'N (Io e Napoleone)' follows Martino, a young teacher who strongly opposes Napoleon Bonaparte. Despite his initial animosity, Martino finds himself appointed as librarian to the exiled Emperor, whom he secretly begins recording memoirs for. Throughout this period, Martino's views of Napoleon begin to change as he learns more about the man behind the myth, engaging in seductions and affairs along the way. However, despite the insights gained, the film culminates in an inevitable disappointment.
'N (Io e Napoleone)' is a comedy-drama set against the backdrop of history, directed by Paolo Virzì in 2006. The story revolves around Martino, a young man whose idealism and opposition to Napoleon Bonaparte are challenged when he finds himself working for the very leader he despises. As Martino records Napoleon's memoirs, his perspectives shift, revealing the complexities of the historical figure beyond the myths and propaganda. While the film is largely focused on Martino's evolving views, it also touches on themes of love, disappointment, and the humanization of historical figures.
