Doutzen Kroes, born January 23, 1985, is a Dutch Frisian model and actress who began her career in the Netherlands before being sent to New York by her agency. She quickly became a Victoria's Secret Angel in 2008 and has been a L'Oréal Paris ambassador since. Kroes has consistently ranked among the top-earning models worldwide, reaching second place on Forbes' list with estimated earnings of $8 million in 2014. Notably, she was not scouted but instead applied to Paparazzi Model Management after sending holiday pictures. Her modeling breakthroughs include being featured on Vogue Italia's cover (shot by Steven Meisel) and winning 'Model of The Year' on Vogue.com in 2005. In 2013, she became the first model/celebrity to appear on four international Vogue covers in one year. Kroes made her film debut in 'Nova Zembla' (2011) and is an active member of Dance4Life, a Dutch HIV/AIDS awareness organization, as well as a supporter of Wildlife Conservation and the World Wildlife Fund.

In the 16th century, Gerrit de Veer, a young writer, joins a Dutch merchant vessel on a mission to discover a trade route across the North Pole to Asia.
