Full Biography

Jill Marie Schoelen, born March 21, 1963 in Burbank, California, is an American actress known for her roles as a 'scream queen' in horror films of the 1980s and early 1990s. Daughter of fashion designer Dorothy Schoelen, Jill began her acting career at age eight with TV appearances and bit parts in movies like D.C. Cab (1983) and Thunder Alley (1985). She gained recognition after starring in Wes Craven's TV movie Chiller (1985), followed by notable roles in The Stepfather (1987) alongside Terry O'Quinn, The Phantom of the Opera (1989) with Robert Englund, and When a Stranger Calls Back (1993). Despite some critically acclaimed performances, Schoelen's career was marred by low-budget films such as Curse II: The Bite (1989) and Cutting Class (1989), which ultimately hindered her progress. She retired from acting after Not Again! (1996), marrying musician/composer Anthony Marinelli and raising two children.

Story

Henry Morrison (Terry O'Quinn), after murdering his entire family, assumes a new identity as Jerry Blake and moves to a new town. He marries Susan Maine (Shelley Hack), a widow with a teenage daughter Stephanie (Jill Schoelen). Initially, Jerry appears to be the perfect stepfather, but soon his obsession with having a 'perfect' family leads him to try and control Stephanie's behavior. When she rebels against his rules, Jerry struggles to maintain his grip on reality and hides his true identity from Susan. The tension builds as Stephanie grows more suspicious of Jerry, leading to a climax where Jerry's true nature is revealed.

Summary

Stepfather (1987) is a psychological horror-thriller directed by Joseph Ruben. The film follows the chilling exploits of Jerry Blake, a serial killer who marries widows and divorcées with children in search of his 'ideal' family. Terry O'Quinn delivers a menacing performance as the seemingly mild-mannered Henry Morrison, who transforms into the obsessive Jerry Blake after murdering his own family. The story explores themes of control, obsession, and the dangers of perfectionism. While not a typical slasher film, it contains elements of horror and suspense that make it a tense and unsettling watch.
