In early 1920s Amsterdam, Han van Meegeren, a young and talented painter, struggles to gain recognition from art critics who dismiss his work as old-fashioned copies of Rembrandt and Vermeer's styles. In a bold move to prove them wrong, he creates a fake Vermeer painting and manages to sell it as an authentic piece. Rather than revealing the truth, Han continues to profit from his forgeries, becoming increasingly entangled in lies. His life takes a dramatic turn when high-ranking Nazi Hermann Göring arrives at his doorstep, seeking a Vermeer for his personal collection.
