Natalie Dormer, born in Reading, Berkshire, attended Chiltern Edge Secondary School and later Reading Blue Coat School. She faced bullying during her school years but excelled academically, serving as head girl and vice-captain of the netball team. Dormer also trained in dance at Allenova School of Dancing. Initially aiming to study history at Cambridge, she instead auditioned for drama schools after not achieving the required A-level grade. She subsequently attended Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

Scandalous Lady W follows the tumultuous life of Lady Seymour Worsley in 18th century Britain. Married to Sir Richard Worsley, Seymour finds herself trapped in a troubled marriage and seeks solace in an affair with her husband's best friend, Captain George Bisset.
