In 1642, renowned Dutch painter Rembrandt agrees to paint a group portrait of the Amsterdam Musketeer Militia, which will later be known as 'The Night Watch'. As he works on the painting, Rembrandt uncovers a conspiracy among the merchants posing as soldiers, including a murder. Confident in his pregnant wife Saskia's support and expecting their first child, Rembrandt decides to expose the conspirators through the commissioned painting. However, tragedy strikes when Saskia dies. The conspirators retaliate by trying to ruin Rembrandt socially and financially, planting a mistress to seduce him, attempting to blind him, insulting his young mistress Hendrickje, conspiring against his son, and ultimately causing his descent into poverty.
