Her career began in theater in New York City during the 1960s before transitioning to film with 'Shoot Out' (1971). She received critical acclaim for her roles, including a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for 'Fat City' (1972) and a Saturn Award for her performance in 'Bad' (1977). Tyrrell was characterized by the New York Times as having a 'whiskey-voiced' persona. She passed away on June 16, 2012.

Storie di ordinaria follia follows Charles Serking, an alcoholic and sex addicted poet who has a sexual encounter with a young girl after giving a lecture to a group of bored students. He then travels to Los Angeles where he continues his promiscuous lifestyle, having sex with various women, each encounter growing more bizarre than the last. Upon meeting Cass, a gorgeous but self-destructive prostitute in a bar, Charles finds himself falling deeply in love.
