In 1958 New York City, Diane Arbus (Nicole Kidman), a wealthy housewife and mother, feels unfulfilled in her conventional life. She assists her husband, Allan (Tyler Butler-Jefferson), who is sponsored by Diane's parents to pursue his photography career. When Lionel Sweeney (Robert Downey Jr.), a mysterious man afflicted with hypertrichosis, moves into the apartment above theirs, Diane feels an inexplicable attraction towards him. Through their relationship, she becomes introduced to the world of 'freaks' and marginalized people, eventually falling in love with Lionel. This connection inspires Diane to explore her own artistic abilities, ultimately leading her to become the renowned photographer known for her portraits of eccentric individuals.
Directed by Steven Shainberg ('Secretary'), 'Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus' (2006) is a biographical drama that imagines the early life and inspiration of famous photographer Diane Arbus. Set in 1958, the film portrays Diane's discontent with her upper-class lifestyle and her eventual discovery of her own artistic voice through her unconventional relationship with Lionel Sweeney. Although some creative liberties were taken to capture Arbus' spirit and evolution as an artist, the movie aims to pay homage to her iconic work and unique perspective on human nature.
