Elizabeth McGovern was born on July 18, 1961, and began her acting career while studying at Juilliard. She made her film debut in Ordinary People (1980). After completing her education, she appeared Off-Broadway and later in famous theaters. In 1981, McGovern earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Evelyn Nesbit in Ragtime.

Once Upon a Time in America follows David 'Noodles' Aaronson, a former Jewish gangster who returns to the Lower East Side of Manhattan after being away for over three decades. Noodles had left his childhood friends and partners-in-crime, Max, Patsy, and Cockeye, behind during their rise to prominence in New York's Prohibition-era. Upon his return, Noodles reunites with his only living friend, Fat Moe, but is haunted by his past and the content of a mysterious leather suitcase. The film explores Noodles' quest for closure, interweaving flashbacks of his life with his friends, their crimes, and the eventual betrayal that led to his exile.
