She graduated from Queen's University with degrees in English Literature and Classical Studies. Skarsten began her acting career on stage at the Royal Alexandra Theatre before transitioning to television. Her notable roles include Dinah Lance/Black Canary in 'Birds of Prey' (2002), Tamsin in 'Lost Girl' (2010-2015), Elizabeth I of England in 'Reign' (2013-2017), and Beth Kane/Alice in 'Batwoman' (2019-present). Skarsten is fluent in English and Norwegian.
