In July 1789, at the Château de Versailles, King Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette live with their courtiers in apparent oblivion to the rumbling French Revolution. When news of the storming of the Bastille reaches them, panic ensues, leading most aristocrats and servants to abandon the palace. Among those who remain is Sidonie Laborde, the Queen's reader, who remains devoted to her mistress despite the chaos. The film follows Sidonie's experiences during these last three days with the Queen.
Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, 'Les adieux à la reine' focuses on the relationship between Queen Marie-Antoinette and her reader, Sidonie Laborde. Directed by Benoît Jacquot in 2012, the film is an adaptation of Chantal Thomas's novel of the same name. While the plot primarily centers around Sidonie's devotion to the Queen amidst the political turmoil, it also offers a glimpse into the final days of the French monarchy.
