Enzo and Jacques are childhood friends who share a passion for diving. After Jacques' father dies during a dive, Enzo and Jacques lose contact. Years later, Johanna, an insurance clerk, meets Jacques in Peru where he's being studied by scientists due to his exceptional ability to endure cold water dives. Intrigued, Johanna travels to Taormina, Sicily, under false pretenses to meet him again at an underwater diving competition also attended by Enzo, the reigning champion. Johanna and Jacques grow closer but Jacques' rivalry with Enzo pushes them both into dangerous territory.
Le grand bleu (The Big Blue) is a 1988 French adventure drama directed by Luc Besson. It's loosely based on the real-life friendship between French diver Jean-Marc Barr and Italian champion Enzo Maiorca. The film explores themes of human potential, competition, and the power of nature through its depiction of deep-sea diving. While it's known for its stunning underwater sequences, the narrative has been criticized by some as being thin compared to Besson's visuals.
