Elena Anaya, born July 17, 1975 in Palencia, Spain, began her acting career in 1995. She gained international recognition for her role in 'Lucía y el sexo' (2001) and was praised for her performance in Pedro Almodóvar's 'Hable con ella' (2002). Anaya appeared as a vampire in the Hollywood film 'Van Helsing' (2004), playing Dracula's bride Aleera. She also starred in the 2006 Spanish historical drama 'Alatriste', portraying María de Castro, the love interest of the titular character played by Viggo Mortensen. In 2004, she was selected as one of European films' Shooting Stars by European Film Promotion.

Set in Spain during the late 16th century, 'Alatriste' follows Captain Diego Alatriste (Viggo Mortensen), a battle-weary soldier who returns home after his company is decimated by enemy forces. Before his death, Alatriste's best friend, Balboa, asks him to take care of his son Íñigo (Unax Ugalde) and raise him as a soldier. Upon arriving in Madrid, Alatriste finds employment as a mercenary, navigating the treacherous waters of court intrigue while trying to keep his promise to Balboa.
