Set in Spain during the late 16th century, 'Alatriste' follows Captain Diego Alatriste (Viggo Mortensen), a battle-weary soldier who returns home after his company is decimated by enemy forces. Before his death, Alatriste's best friend, Balboa, asks him to take care of his son Íñigo (Unax Ugalde) and raise him as a soldier. Upon arriving in Madrid, Alatriste finds employment as a mercenary, navigating the treacherous waters of court intrigue while trying to keep his promise to Balboa.
'Alatriste', directed by Agustín Díaz Yanes, is a sweeping historical epic based on Arturo Pérez-Reverte’s best-selling novels. The film transports viewers back to Spain in the late 17th century, where political intrigue, swordplay, and lust intertwine. 'Alatriste' offers an immersive look into the life of Captain Diego Alatriste, a battle-hardened soldier who finds himself at the center of a complex web of power struggles and personal loyalties.
