Happy Endings interweaves three stories set in Los Angeles. In one, Mamie (Laura Dern), a psychologist at an abortion clinic who secretly had a son she gave up for adoption years ago, meets Nicky (Tom Arnold), a filmmaker who wants to make a documentary about her finding her son. Mamie enlists the help of Javier (Jordi Mollà), her masseuse boyfriend, to retrieve information about her son from Nicky without his knowledge. Meanwhile, Mamie's stepbrother Charley (Steve Coogan) and his partner Gil (Jason Priestley) suspect that Pam (Maggie Gyllenhaal) and her partner Diane may have used Gil's sperm to conceive their child Max without telling them. Charley embarks on a quest for proof. Otis uses his infatuation to try and impress Jude while trying to keep his sexual orientation hidden from his wealthy father Frank (Harris Yulin).
