In 1937 Los Angeles, private investigator Jake 'J.J.' Gittes takes on a case involving Hollis Mulwray, chief engineer for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. Mrs. Mulwray suspects her husband of infidelity, but as Gittes investigates, he uncovers evidence suggesting that Mulwray is being framed. When Mulwray is found dead, Gittes becomes further entangled in the mystery. He discovers that Mulwray's former business partner and Evelyn's father, Noah Cross, is involved in a water rights scheme. The key to unraveling the conspiracy may lie with an unknown young woman seen with Mulwray before his death.
