Dame Emma Thompson, born on April 15, 1959, is a British actress and screenwriter with an extensive career spanning four decades. Born to actors Eric Thompson and Phyllida Law, she was educated at Newnham College, Cambridge, where she became a member of the Footlights troupe and appeared in comedy sketch series 'Alfresco'. Her breakthrough came with the West End revival of 'Me and My Girl' in 1985. She won BAFTA TV Awards for Best Actress for her performances in BBC series 'Tutti Frutti' and 'Fortunes of War'. Thompson has collaborated extensively with her then-husband, actor and director Kenneth Branagh, notably in films like 'Henry V', 'Dead Again', and 'Much Ado About Nothing'. She won both the BAFTA Award and Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in 'Howards End' (1992). Thompson is one of few actors to receive two Oscar nominations in the same year—Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress—for 'The Remains of the Day' and 'In the Name of the Father'. She wrote and starred in 'Sense and Sensibility', winning another Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Her notable film roles include the Harry Potter series, Nanny McPhee, Stranger than Fiction, An Education, Men in Black 3, Beauty and the Beast, Cruella, and Matilda the Musical.

In 'Angels in America', set amidst the AIDS crisis and socio-political changes of 1985 New York City, six interconnected lives are explored. Prior Walter (Justin Kirk), a gay man, learns he has AIDS and his lover Louis (Ben Shenkman) leaves him due to fear and guilt. Meanwhile, Joe Pitt (Patrick Wilson), a Mormon Republican attorney, struggles with his sexuality while being pushed towards a government job by right-wing fixer Roy Cohn (Al Pacino). Pitt's wife Harper (Mary-Louise Parker) is struggling with her sexless marriage and prescription drug addiction. Prior's illness progresses, but he finds solace in Belize (Jeffrey Wright), an ex-drag queen nurse, and his mother. An angel visits Prior, offering him a chance at prophecy upon his death. As the characters grapple with their realities, they find themselves interconnected through unexpected paths.
