Alex Meneses was born Alexandra Estella DeAnna Meneses on February 12, 1965, in Chicago to parents of Mexican American and Ukrainian American descent. She studied acting at The Second City Improvisational Theater during summer vacations while growing up. After graduating from high school, Meneses moved to Milan for modeling work, staying there for two years before relocating to Los Angeles. There, she studied acting at the Lee Strasberg Institute. Meneses is known for her role as Teresa Morales in Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and recurring roles on television shows such as Everybody Loves Raymond and Friends.
