In Victorian England, wealthy patriarch Sir Harald Alabaster invites impoverished biologist William Adamson into his home to study insects and conduct scientific research. William becomes romantically involved with Sir Harald's seductive daughter Eugenia, but as their relationship deepens, he begins to uncover dark secrets hidden within the Alabaster manor. The true nature of the family's dynamics and the disturbing events occurring behind closed doors are gradually revealed.
Angels and Insects (1995) is a drama film directed by Philip Haas, based on short stories 'Moths' and 'Nymphs and Shepherds' by A.S. Byatt. The movie explores themes of class society, forbidden love, and the darker side of Victorian England through the eyes of William Adamson, a young scientist who becomes entwined in the lives of the wealthy Alabaster family. Despite its intriguing premise and promising cast led by Mark Rylance and Kris Kristofferson, the film received mixed reviews due to its slow pacing and lack of resolution.
