In Enlightenment-era France, philosopher Denis Diderot is a member of an aristocratic circle led by Baron d'Holbach, who practices libertarian principles at his rural castle estate. They secretly publish the forbidden Encyclopédie while Jewish assistant Abraham plays the organ to mask the noise. Madame Therbouche, a flirtatious painter from Berlin, arrives and convinces Diderot to pose nude for her, causing tension with his wife Antoinette. Their saucy scene is witnessed by Baron d'Holbach's brother, the Cardinal, who is investigating illegal Encyclopédie printers. To distract him, the baroness confesses her sins and sends other women to do the same, joined by Chevalier de Jerfeuil. Meanwhile, a freedman Turkish eunuch named Mohamed causes controversy with his intimate massages for female guests. Diderot's beliefs about morality are challenged throughout these events, leading to secrets being exposed and potentially damaging consequences.
