In 'Heat and Dust', Anne, a contemporary woman, investigates her grand-aunt Olivia's scandalous life in India during the early 1920s. Recently married to Douglas, a British civil servant stationed in India, Olivia becomes captivated by Indian culture and its ruler, a nawab who embodies both British refinement and Indian opulence. However, her fascination with him places her in danger amidst bandit raids and political intrigues between the British community and the nawab. As Anne unravels Olivia's past, she begins to reflect on her own life.
