The movie 'Le violon rouge' (1998), directed by François Girard, revolves around a mysterious violin, known as the Red Violin. The instrument's journey spans three centuries and crosses continents.
In 1685 China, the violin is crafted by Master Li from rare materials gifted to him by his daughter Cao. She dedicates her life to playing it until her death during childbirth.
Two hundred years later in Vienna, a young girl named Anne Rice receives the Red Violin as a gift from her father. She grows up playing it beautifully and falls in love with the story behind its creation.
In the present day (1997), renowned violinist Tim Fisk purchases the Red Violin at an auction for $2 million. He begins to experience strange occurrences, such as nightmares featuring Cao's spirit, after playing the violin.
Fisk travels to Montreal to have the violin authenticated by a musicologist named Charles Morisset. There he meets his former lover and violinist, Francesca Timani, who is also drawn to the violin's mystery.
