Elizabeth McGovern was born on July 18, 1961, and began her acting career while studying at Juilliard. She made her film debut in Ordinary People (1980). After completing her education, she appeared Off-Broadway and later in famous theaters. In 1981, McGovern earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Evelyn Nesbit in Ragtime.

Ragtime (1981), directed by Miloš Forman, is a historical drama set in early 20th century New York.
