Janet Wright was born in England and raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. She was part of a family of theater actors, with siblings Anne, John, and Susan. Wright worked extensively in television and cinema, but she also participated in numerous theater productions such as 'Les Belles Soeurs' with her sisters Susan and Anne. Wright has been married twice; first to Brian Richmond, with whom she had two children, Jacob (a playwright) and Celine. She is currently married to Bruce Davis. Tragically, in 1991, a house fire claimed the lives of her sister Susan, along with her parents, Jack and Ruth.

In 'McCabe and Mrs. Miller', a gambler named John McCabe arrives in a small mining town called Presbyterian Church during its gold rush boom. He opens a saloon, hoping to exploit the influx of miners for his own gain. Meanwhile, a prostitute named Mrs. Miller comes to town and starts working out of his establishment. The two form an uneasy partnership, with Mcобеabe providing protection for her while she manages the girls working in the saloon. When a wealthy mining company wants to buy out the town's claim, they hire two ruthless gunslingers, Butler and Sears, to deal with any dissenters. McCabe tries to negotiate with them but ends up accidentally shooting Butler. In retaliation, Sears burns down the saloon and kills Mrs. Miller. With his business destroyed and his partner dead, McCabe leaves town alone.
