In spring 1945, as Russian forces invade Berlin, a nameless woman in her early thirties, a patriotic journalist with international credentials, begins keeping a diary. Initially safe due to her knowledge of Russian and journalistic credentials, she soon faces rape threats from Russian soldiers. To protect herself, she invites the attentions of a Russian major named Andreij Rybkin, becoming his mistress. The situation remains tense as other Russian officers pressure Major Rybkin, and dramas unfold within her apartment block. She questions her morality: 'How do we go on living?' Meanwhile, her husband Gerd, an officer at the Russian front, is unknowningly absent.
