Me Me Lai, born Me Ching in Burma in 1952 to a Burmese mother and English father, moved to England in her teens and began acting, appearing in television series like Paul Temple and Jason King before transitioning to films such as Crucible of Terror (1971) and Au Pair Girls (1972). She is notably known for her lead roles in Italian cannibal films like Il Paese del Sesso Selvaggio (1972), Ultimo Mondo Cannibale (1977), and Mangiati Vivi (1980). Lai also had a role in Blake Edwards's Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978) and was co-hostess of British game shows The Golden Shot and Sale of the Century. Her last film was The Element of Crime (1984) by Lars von Trier.

In 'Forbrydelsens element', Fisher, an ex-cop, returns to his old beat in northern Europe after a thirteen-year hiatus in Cairo. His former mentor and author of the treatise 'The Element of Crime', asks him to solve a series of murders involving lottery ticket sellers. Guided by the theories from the book and a three-year-old police surveillance report on suspect Harry Grey, Fisher retraces Grey's steps in an attempt to catch the killer.
