In 1936 Italy, Giovanni Comini, the youngest Federal promoted to his position, is summoned to Rome for a delicate mission. He must monitor Gabriele D'Annunzio, a nationally revered poet and war hero who has become restless under Benito Mussolini's fascist regime. Mussolini fears that D'Annunzio's actions could jeopardize Italy's alliance with Nazi Germany.
