In 'Return of the Living Dead', a bumbling employee at a medical supply warehouse accidentally releases an toxic gas that revives corpses and turns them into zombies. The film follows two teenagers, Freddy and Tina, who witness this event while making out in the cemetery. They attempt to warn the police but are initially disbelieved. Meanwhile, the zombies start attacking living people, spreading their disease-like condition through bites or contact with bodily fluids. A military operation is launched to contain the outbreak, but things go awry when they bomb the city's power plant, causing an explosion that turns everyone in its path into more zombies.
