In Berlin, 1931, Jakob Fabian, a doctorate holder in German studies, works as an advertising copywriter by day and frequents the city's eccentric establishments with his friend Stephan Labude at night. While Labude is passionate about communism and sex, Fabian remains detached and cynical, believing in neither political ideologies nor the promise of 'the victory of decency.'
