Steve and the Dead Girl (2020) tells the story of a lonely, socially awkward young man named Steve who lives in his car after being evicted from his apartment. One day, he discovers the lifeless body of a woman in his neighborhood. Instead of reporting it to authorities, he takes her home, names her 'Shelly', and starts caring for her corpse, treating it as if she were alive. Meanwhile, Steve's life begins to improve; he lands a job at a local restaurant and even starts a relationship with a co-worker named Kelly. However, his disturbing obsession with Shelly continues to grow, leading him down a dark path that threatens both his newfound happiness and his sanity.
Directed by Katlyn Aviles in her feature debut, Steve and the Dead Girl (2020) is a unique blend of horror, dark comedy, and drama. The film explores themes of loneliness, grief, and obsession through the twisted perspective of its socially isolated protagonist, Steve. Set against the backdrop of contemporary Los Angeles, the story highlights the struggles of urban poverty and mental health issues. Although classified as a horror film due to its disturbing premise, 'Steve and the Dead Girl' is more of a psychological character study that relies on atmosphere and tension rather than cheap scares. The film premiered at the 2020 SXSW Film Festival, where it received critical acclaim for its originality, dark humor, and Aviles' assured direction.
