In wintertime St. Petersburg, young Matvey, an ice-skating delivery boy from a poor family, loses his job at a bakery despite his hard work. All he has left is a pair of silver-plated skates inherited from his father. Desperate, he joins Alex's gang of pickpockets operating on the frozen canals. Meanwhile, Alisa, the daughter of a high-ranking official, feels stifled in her luxurious but confining home. Yearning for independence and academic pursuits contrary to her father's traditional views, she seeks an escape from her opulent prison.
