Sylvie Testud was born on January 17, 1971 in Lyon, France. Her parents separated when she was two years old. Raised by her mother in Lyon's Croix-Rousse district, she learned Chinese in high school. Fascinated by cinema from a young age, she moved to Paris to study history and acting at Cours Florent and the Conservatory under Jacques Lassalle and Catherine Hiegel. Her first screen appearance was in 1994's Couples et amants. She gained international recognition for her role in Caroline Link's 'Beyond Silence' (1997), earning a German Film Prize for Best Actress. In France, she received critical acclaim for her performance in Thomas Vincent's 'Karnaval' (1998). Notable roles followed in films like Chantal Akerman's 'La Captive' (2000) and Jean-Pierre Denis' 'Les Blessures assassines' (2001), earning her a César nomination for Most Promising Actress. She has since preferred auteur cinema.

In 'Insumisa', Enrique Faber, a Swiss surgeon, arrives in Cuba in 1810 to search for his missing son. After weeks of investigation, he learns that his son was killed during a slave revolt. Disbelieving this news, Enrique settles in Baracoa and marries Juana, a local woman. His success as a doctor and their marriage attract jealousy and malicious rumors about his high-pitched voice and fragile appearance. One night, four men sent by a slave trader attack him. They undress Enrique and discover that he is actually a woman. Enrique is arrested and faces a scandalous trial.
