Mel Heflin, born and raised in the small town of Harmony Springs, Florida, was known locally as the town drunk. His life changed dramatically when he survived a bear attack that resulted in the death of his nephew. After the incident, Heflin started exhibiting unusual behaviors and losing chunks of time, suggesting to zoologist Kyle Reading that he might be a werewolf. Despite his initial disbelief, Heflin came to accept his new condition with the help of Reading, who believed Dean was transforming every 28 days.
