Woke follows Keef Knight, an African-American cartoonist on the verge of mainstream success with his comic series 'Toast and Butter'. After a white police officer mistakes him for a suspect in a robbery and assaults him, Keef begins to see racial injustice everywhere. This unexpected incident awakens Keef's consciousness about systemic racism, causing him to reevaluate his life and comedic style. As he navigates his newfound awareness and the challenges it brings, Keef must also deal with the demands of his white publisher who wants to keep 'Toast and Butter' apolitical.
