In seventeenth-century Czechoslovakia, a beggar woman named Maryna Schuchová hides the Host (the consecrated communion wafer) in her scarf during Communion, intending to give it to midwife Groerová for healing an ailing cow. Young parish priest Schmidt declares Maryna a witch and convinces Countess De Galle to summon Inquisitor Boblig from Edelstadt. Seeing this as an opportunity, Boblig arrives with his assistant Thaler and uses torture and threats to force women to confess to meetings with the devil and memorize lies fabricated for the inquisition tribunal. As accusations spread, wealthy burghers become targets, and their possessions are seized.
