Paul, a German soldier, goes AWOL when his military truck stops at a fast food restaurant. He returns to his childhood home in the countryside where his elder brother Max lives with his girlfriend Kerstin. When Kerstin breaks up with Max and leaves, Paul begins to disrupt their lives. Max soon brings home Lene, his new Danish actress girlfriend, who captures Paul's immediate attraction despite her refusal of his advances. Throughout this time, Paul exhibits anger and temper issues towards those around him, including his brother, an old friend, and his ex-girlfriend Kerstin. Meanwhile, the military begins searching for Paul.
Bungalow (2002) is a debut film by Ulrich Köhler, part of the celebrated Berlin School. It's a mesmerizing portrait of Paul, a young German soldier grappling with his responsibilities and disillusionment with everyday life. Set over a few summer days in the countryside, Paul disrupts familial dynamics and falls for his brother's girlfriend Lene. The film explores themes of militarism, familial estrangement, youthful ennui, and the barely contained despair of its characters.
