Following the death of their five-year-old son Frankie, Irish couple Johnny and Sarah Sullivan immigrate illegally to New York City with their two remaining children, Christy and Ariel. They move into a dilapidated tenement in Hell's Kitchen, sharing it with drug addicts and transvestites. Among them is Mateo, an African-American artist nicknamed 'the screamer', who has AIDS. The family struggles financially but tries to maintain a supportive environment despite their circumstances. Christy, who records their life with her camcorder, believes Frankie's spirit grants her three wishes. Sarah becomes pregnant, and the memory of Frankie continues to influence their lives.
In America (2002) is a semi-autobiographical drama directed by Jim Sheridan, exploring themes of immigration, grief, and perseverance. Set in 1980s New York City, the film follows an Irish family seeking a new life after tragedy strikes at home. The narrative balances their struggle to adapt to their new environment with moments of joy and hope, making it an inspirational tale of resilience in the face of adversity.
