In the idyllic island of Capri in 1914, Lucia, a young woman in her twenties, tends to her family's goats while living under the patriarchal rules of her brothers. After their father's death, her grumpy older brother decides to marry her off for financial gain. Seeking freedom, Lucia joins a nudist colony of young North Europeans who have settled on the island to live an alternative lifestyle and pursue art. There, she falls under the spell of Seybu, the commune's leader and painter, who teaches her to read and stimulates her intellectual growth. However, Lucia becomes the object of desire for local doctor Carlo, leading to a rivalry between Seybu and Carlo that Lucia finds tiresome.
