After the death of her stepdaughter's rapist and murderer, pregnant Inspector Amaia Salazar attends his trial in Pamplona. However, before the trial begins, Jason Medina commits suicide, leaving a note with the word 'Tarttalo'. Amaia gives birth to her son Ibai soon after. Reinstated four months later, she is assigned two cases: investigating the profanation of a church where an amputated baby arm was left on the altar and finding a woman's corpse whose location was revealed by her incarcerated husband who committed suicide afterwards. Both cases lead Amaia back to Elizondo, her natal town, where she discovers that the victims were part of the Agotes tribe persecuted in the Middle Ages. She seeks help from her former mentor Aloisius Dupree and consults with a tarot card caster aunt while investigating the crimes. Meanwhile, her husband James moves to Elizondo to be closer to Amaia and Ibai, but their relationship starts to strain due to the case. It's revealed that the baby arm belongs to Amaia's twin sister she never knew about, and her mother Rosario, institutionalized years ago after attempting to kill Amaia, has killed a male nurse with 'Tarttalo' written in blood under the bed. Amaia must now confront her family's past while solving the case before the killer strikes again, all while Elizondo faces an incoming flood.
