Pepa (2018) follows the titular character, Pepa, a young woman living in Bratislava with her husband and two children. The story begins when Pepa discovers that her husband has been cheating on her with their neighbor. Heartbroken but determined, she decides to leave him and move back to her rural hometown. There, she reconnects with her estranged sister and tries to rebuild her life while dealing with the challenges of being a single mother. Throughout the film, Pepa struggles with her newfound independence, facing judgement from her conservative community and the financial strain of supporting herself and her children alone. However, she also discovers her inner strength and begins to find joy in her new life.
Directed by Ján Novák and released in 2018, Pepa is a Czech comedy-drama that explores themes of love, loss, and resilience through the lens of a woman navigating divorce and single motherhood in contemporary Slovakia. Based on true events from Novák's own life, the film is a heartfelt and humorous portrayal of Pepa's journey to rediscover herself and find happiness after her marriage falls apart. Pepa premiered at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and was well-received for its authentic storytelling and relatable protagonist.
