In the sultry summer of 1947, in a small border town in Slovakia, respected builder Mr. Hampl arrives with his young wife Nada. She catches the eye of Daniel, a local teacher still grappling with his experiences from World War II. Initially resisting Daniel's advances, Nada's resolve wavers as the scent of flowering agave permeates the air. When the rare plant finally blooms after three decades, Nada's decision to resist is irrevocably altered. As their affair unfolds, the political climate shifts ominously with the looming Communist coup set to purge Slovakia's intelligentsia.
Agava (2015), directed by Ondrej Sulaj, is a compelling drama set against the backdrop of post-WWII Slovakia. The film tells a poignant love story between Nada and Daniel, complicated by political tension as the Communist takeover approaches. The titular agave plant serves as a powerful symbol of fleeting opportunity and change. Although sources vary in plot specifics, they converge on this core narrative and historical context.
