Red Joan follows the life of Joan Stanley (Dame Judi Dench), a British physicist who becomes an unwitting recruit for the KGB in the mid-1930s. Initially drawn to communism's ideals during her university years, she joins the Communist Party and is approached by a Russian agent, Sonya, who persuades her to share her knowledge of nuclear physics with the Soviet Union. Joan, believing she can help maintain a nuclear balance between East and West, begins passing secrets, enabling Russia to keep pace with the Western atomic weapons program. Over five decades, she remains undetected as a spy while leading an ordinary life as a widow in small-town England. The film intercuts between Joan's interrogation by MI5 in 2000 and her memories of her past actions.
